Bringing It All Together

You Built the Smart Sneaker Factory!

You started with an idea for a new sneaker. Now you have a connected, monitored manufacturing system capable of producing it at scale.

Your Manufacturing Journey

1. PLAN — What are we making?

You defined the product and identified the information needed before manufacturing could begin. You saw how digital design and manufacturing information can become the starting point for everything that follows.

2. PROTOTYPE — How can we make it?

You created early versions of the product and manufacturing process. You explored how rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing, and digital production tools allow manufacturers to learn before committing to full production.

3. TEST — Did we make it correctly?

You measured the physical prototype and compared results with specifications. You used sensors, metrology, machine vision, tolerances, and connected data to determine whether the product met requirements.

4. ANALYZE — What is the data telling us?

You looked beyond a single failed sneaker and searched for patterns across multiple prototypes. You used manufacturing data and analytics to identify a possible relationship between mold temperature and sole thickness.

You also learned an important lesson: A pattern can provide evidence for an investigation without proving what caused the problem.

5. REFINE — How can we improve it?

You turned your analysis into a testable process improvement. Using a digital twin, you experimented with mold temperature virtually before validating the change with the physical process. The improved settings then became part of the manufacturing information used moving forward.

6. PRODUCE — Can we make it reliably at scale?

Finally, you moved from a successful process to full production. You used automation, robotics, sensors, connected systems, real-time monitoring, cybersecurity, and traceability to help keep production consistent.

The Big Idea

Smart manufacturing isn’t about filling a factory with the newest machines.

It’s about connecting:

PEOPLE + PROCESSES + TECHNOLOGY + DATA

Technology is most valuable when it helps solve a real manufacturing problem.

Before the Assessment

You don’t need to memorize every screen from the Smart Sneaker Factory.

Instead, make sure you can think through questions like these:

  • What happens during each of the six manufacturing phases?
  • Why might a manufacturer create a prototype before production?
  • How do sensors and measurement systems help manufacturers understand quality?
  • Why is collecting data different from analyzing data?
  • How can analytics help identify manufacturing problems?
  • What can a digital twin help a manufacturer do?
  • Where can automation and robotics add value?
  • Why does a connected factory need cybersecurity?
  • What is the digital thread?
  • How do people, processes, technology, and data work together?

Ask yourself:

What problem needs to be solved, what information do I have, and what would help me make the best manufacturing decision?

When you’re ready, continue to the Smart Manufacturing Assessment.
